The Big Boy is Back!

I was chilly yesterday morning as I stood near the rails out in the middle of no-where Wyoming. The eastern sky was growing lighter and lighter in anticipation of sunrise. I was waiting for something I had wanted to see for several years. The only noise was the occasional conversation of other railroad fans eagerly waiting for the same thing I was wanting to witness. Then I heard it, that deep throat-ed steamboat whistle off in the distance. My heart was pounding as I readied my two cameras and strained to see the source of the sound. Next came the first sight of condensed steam rising out of the stacks of the 4014 and the 844, both giant steam locomotives owned by the Union Pacific. I had seen the 844 before, but the 4014 was something new, something special. Pulled out of the Pomona fairgrounds where it had been on display for some 50 years and restored to it's former glory she was under steam and out on the rails for the first time in decades. And there I was, about to fulfill a dream of seeing a Union Pacific Big Boy riding the rails! I finally caught sight of the train and started the video camera. Next I began shooting stills. As the train passed under the signal bridge my heart was coming out of my chest. I kept right on pressing the camera button, turning to photograph it as it headed past me and off into the distance. My morning visit with this behemoth was over as fast as it began. But there was no time to think. I was packing up my equipment and headed to the next spot and I had to get there before the train. What a thrill! I finally got to witness the Union Pacific Big Boy in full steam high-balling the mainline once again. It doesn't get any better than that!
