Every Halloween I go down to main street and hand out candy to hundreds of Alpine children, dressed up, and looking for those yummy treats. It's a great way to promote my business and talk to the residents who live in this beautiful bedroom community. Some time later, on Halloween night, I sit by the door, waiting to hand out candy to kids knocking at my door. Unfortunately the numbers have been fewer and fewer each year. I've always blamed it on a maturing neighborhood and our location. But this year I honestly though there would be more since we've had a lot more children move into the surrounding homes. My wife reported only one family of kids came the entire night. We might as well turn out the lights and go to bed early. As for me, I was out of town. I took some grandchildren' who lived in the very small town of Vernon, Trick or Treating because their dad had to work a swing shift that night. I got the better half of the deal, not just because I was with my grandsons, but because I was having a traditional Halloween where kids actually go door to door, talking to their neighbors and having fun. I've come away this week wondering if Trunk or Treats have ruined Halloween for good. Time for me to collect some data. What do you think. Did you not take your kids out for Halloween just because you already took them to Trunk or Treat. I'd like to know if my theory is true.
