I walked out onto the back deck because I could hear what I thought was a puppy yelping in a somewhat high pitched tone. I looked up the hill to see a full grown turkey was the culprit. He was pacing back an forth across the hill desperately trying to find a missing chick which was chirping and running back and forth. The small bird could not find his way up our 4 foot tall retaining wall. Both birds were in a panic. The fiasco went on for about 20 minutes until the chick finally found it's way around the end of the wall and back to dad. We see the wild turkeys quite often since our subdivision borders the hills that lead to the Wasatch Mountains. The photographs here were taken the day before as this turkey wandered through the backyard looking for food. They have a face only a mother can love, but they are interesting to see wandering through the neighborhood, sometimes roosting in our crab apple tree, sitting on branches I swear won't hold the avian monsters. Somehow the branches always survive. So I found it interesting to see the concern an adult turkey had for its offspring.
